The Text:
13:27 “This is what they told him: ‘We came to the land you sent us to; it does indeed flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.’”
The Context:

Chapter 13-15:41 God commands Moses to send 12 scouts on an expedition to Canaan to reconnoiter the land and its inhabitants.  In these chapters, as well as in the book of Exodus, we learn that the Promised Land is a land flowing with milk and honey.  While this image is descriptive of resources in the land, it is also a metaphor for plentiful bounty.

What it Means for Advocates:

In America, most of us have access to the food we need, yet 1 in 8 Americans are hungry.  Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but reality is much different.  Right  now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger.  We all know and are in contact with people affected by hunger, even though we might not be aware of it.

When surrounded by plenty it can be hard to recognize the hungry people among us. Use some of MAZON’s partner agencies to find a web resource for a food bank or soup kitchen in your local area.

Learn about local hunger and how and where it is hidden in your area.

What surprises you about either the closeness or distance of the people in your community who are hungry?
