Parasha Guide » Korach

The Text:

Numbers 16:1-3 “Now Korah…betook himself, along with Dathan and Abiram...and On…descendents of Reuben…to rise up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty Israelite notables-chieftans of the community, chosen in the assembly, with fine reputations.  They combined against Moses and Aaron…”

The Context:

In one of the most dramatic stories in the Torah, Korach challenges Moses’ and Aaron’s authority and asserts himself as their equal.  Korach’s motivations are selfish rather than for the sake of the people.

What it Means for Advocates:

In the 20th century, only seven minor skirmishes took place between nations over shared water resources, while over 300 treaties were signed during the same period of time.  Investigate how treatises regarding water and shared boundaries can lead to cooperation on the United Nation’s website.

Israel is in a water crisis.  Although it is surrounded by water, Israel has difficult relationships with the neighboring countries with which they share these water boundaries.  The Jewish National Fund promotes water resources and conservation in Israel.  Learn more about environmental and political activism over water systems in the Middle East and how it impacts Israel.
