Numbers 27:16 “Let the YHVH, Source of the breath of all flesh, appoint a leader for the community who shall go out before them and come in before them, and who shall take them out and bring them in, so that YHVH’s community may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”

The Context:
|
|
This portion describes the succession of Moses by Joshua. Moses is not allowed to enter the Promised Land yet he still expresses concern for his people’s future. Moses urges God to choose someone who will lead the charge rather than a leader who would remain behind in safety. The transition of leadership is significant as until now Moses has been the primary figure of the biblical story.

What it Means for Advocates:

In choosing local and world leaders, do we investigate their understanding and action on hunger? How can we choose leaders who won’t stay behind in safety, but who will lead the charge? Who are some of the global leaders on issues of hunger? Some may be elected and some may be celebrities…how do different types of leaders affect change? What are some of the significant global initiatives to instigate change?
