I am very fortunate. I was raised in a family and work for an organization whose actions are based on fundamental Judaic values connected to justice, generosity, and community responsibility.

While not traditionally observant, my family instilled in me the principles of tzedakah, the obligation to act justly toward people in need, and b’tzelem Elohim, the belief that every human being is equal in the eyes of G-d. My parents and their friends lived these principles, taking the lead in establishing a community mental health center, a senior center, and a neighborhood center; they sat on boards; they raised money and donated time- and their lives taught me that this work was important, meaningful, obligatory, and immensely satisfying.

However, this work is not enough.  We must look toward the future and strive to eliminate hunger and its causes from our world. I dream of a world where it will be understood that everyone has the right to plentiful and nutritious food; where there will be no stigma attached to true need; and where the absence of hunger will be a reflection of a changed global society that values and respects all people.
